Have you ever wondered why it was so important to be baptized after you got saved? Or did you believe like I did and THOUGHT you were saved and got baptized because that is just what everyone else did? Well not only did I just get baptized Sunday May 3rd, 2015 but I got baptized on the correct side of salvation! Jesus started His ministry with being baptized by John The Baptist. "And when Jesus was baptized, immediately he went up from the water, and behold, the heavens were opened to him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and coming to rest on him;" Matt. 3:16
When you get baptized, it is a symbol of what has happened to you when you got saved. You are immersed into the water (died), you were brought out of the water (resurrected) and will now walk with Jesus to fulfill His will for your life. You are telling the world what God has done for you. Your old self died into the water, your new self was raised up out of the water and now you are to go tell the world about The Gospel of Jesus Christ. I spoke to someone a few months ago about baptism and they put it in a neat way that I had never thought of it before. They said that when you get baptized it is like you are being reborn again as you were out of your mothers womb. You come out of the water in the baptistry as you came out of the water from your mothers womb.
There are three components to Baptism and why it is important for a new believer to be Baptized.
1. Method - Immersion. A person must be immersed into the water completely. Jesus was immersed in the Jordan River to be baptized. We cannot be sprinkled with water, we must be immersed as Jesus was. Baptize literally means "to immerse."
2. Meaning - In Romans 6:4-8 "We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him in order that the body of sin might be brought to nothing, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. For one who has died has been set free from sin. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him." When we get saved we have been made into a new creation. So we are buried into the water (death), then we are raised out of the water (resurrected) and then we are to walk with Jesus and tell everyone what God has done for us. We were not saved to be silent sitting in our church pews producing no fruit. But you MUST BE SAVED BEFORE YOU ARE BAPTIZED. That would be like having the funeral before you die! We must identify with Christ in the death, burial and resurrection.
3. Motive - There are three parts to the Motive:
a.) We have a Master to profess - we must show God and everyone we are a new person with a new Master and we are not ashamed. Getting baptized does not save you, it shows that you ARE saved. It is an illustration of what happens to you when you get saved.
b.) We have a message to convey - its an opportunity to share the gospel without saying a word. You give your testimony in front of everyone in attendance that day.
c.) We have a mandate to complete - Baptism is not necessary for salvation but it is necessary for obedience. You can't excel in your walk with Christ until you get Baptized. Getting baptized is the first thing God commands us to do after we get saved.
We must confess that Christ is our Savior, we must obey Him and declare His saving gospel for the world to see.
If you have been saved but have not been Baptized on this side of Salvation, please get that taken care of with your local church. We must obey God's commands in believers baptism so there is nothing that could hinder our continued walk with Him.
