The day I surrendered to God was the last day I lived my life. It was the first day of the rest of my life that I will solely listen to His voice and follow His lead. That is the wonderful thing about surrendering your life, it is no longer yours. It is completely up to Him what He wants for your life. You just need to seek His guidance and listen. That is why it is called child-like faith and obedience. It is like a child listening to their parents' directions and guidance for their life.
If you look in the bible to some of the people who lived a surrendered life: Hannah waited on God's perfect timing without knowing when, Abraham followed God's leading without knowing where, Mary expected a miracle without knowing how, Joseph trusted God's purpose without knowing why circumstances happened the way they did. Each of these people were fully surrendered to God.
You know you are fully surrendered to God when you rely on God to work things out instead of forcing them. My husband and I know a lot about this, unfortunately. There have been MANY times in our past that we have forced doors open when God meant for them to stay closed. And times where we have forced doors shut when He wanted to open them but we were too blind and selfish to follow Him. So in turn, we did things OUR own way and let me tell you friends, it does not turn out pretty. There is a reason He is the Lord of your life and not YOU!
You must let go and let God do His work. Stop trying to be "in charge" or "fix" the situation. Pray and seek His guidance for your life assignment and He will reveal it to you. The Bible says, "Surrender yourself to the Lord and wait patiently for Him." Instead of trying harder, you trust more.
You also know you are surrendered when you don't react to criticism and rush to defend yourself. When you give your life to The Lord, He IS your defender. He will come to your defense and fight your battles for you. Trust me on this, you will always be right in your stance and in your fight when you have Jesus in your corner.
The final point I would like to talk about in trusting God with your life is, its a doozy, MONEY! Ouch! Did I step on some toes? It is so hard for people to surrender their lives to the Lord but also want to live a comfortable life and save up for retirement. But retirement is not the goal of a surrendered life; retirement competes with God for the primary attention in our lives. Jesus said, "You can't serve both God and money. Wherever your treasure is, your heart will be also."
Genuine surrender is saying, "Father, if this problem, sickness, pain, or circumstance that I am facing is needed to fulfill your purpose and glory in my life or someone else's, please don't take it away." Just as Jesus said on the day before his crucifixion. He knew that by surrendering His life to God would mean that he is fulfilling God's purpose. Surrender is hard work. In our case, it is intense warfare in our very selfish, self-centered nature. But the day you surrender is the day you will be set free!
