We all have "stuff" in our lives that we think we have to have and we think we need. It may be a car, camper, boat, vacation home, or here is the big one, MONEY! I know that we must work and make a living to support our family. The bible states in 2 Thessalonians 3:10 "For even when we were with you, we would give you this command: If anyone is not willing to work, let him not eat." And in 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for members of his household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever." Wow, that is some strong stuff there! But when we have a lot of "stuff" we end up making the love of money our idol and not God. There is a reason why millionaires are never truly happy and end up overdosing on drugs and die. Because the LOVE of money is the root of all evil and all of the money in the world will never replace the love that God provides you with when you get saved and live for Him.
When you make your "things" that you store here on earth more important, than your focus is here. But when you focus on your treasures and rewards that you will receive in Heaven, then your focus will be towards Heaven. In Matthew 6:19-21
"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." When we are living for The Lord and doing His will, we will receive rewards when we get to Heaven. The rewards we get in Heaven will never perish. The "things" we have here are exactly that, just "things." You came into this world with nothing and you will go out of this world with nothing. But if you are saved and living for God and produce fruits for Him, He will have everlasting rewards for you stored up in Heaven. And remember this, blessings we receive from God are not always prosperity.
God says to not worry about food, clothes, water - He will provide you with everything you need. You may not have everything you want, but you will have everything you need. He wants you to put nothing above Him. Anything you put above Him takes your focus off Him. In Ephesians 1:3 talks about how God has blessed us not here, but in heavenly places. This life is just a blink of an eye compared to our everlasting life in Heaven.
Some points to remember:
1. It is not wrong to own things
2. God made all good things
3. God knows we need things
Please don't get me wrong, I am not telling you that is it wrong to own a boat, have some extra money in your pocket, or go camping (I LOVE to go camping!!) But what IS wrong is when we put those "things" above God and make them more important. God must be the master of everything. Trust me in this, dear sisters, this is something I know too much about from experience. When my husband let money own him and let exercise own me, we found ourselves in the biggest heap of mess possible! The Lord had to get our attention by allowing the devil to enter a crack in our marriage that was formed due the LOVE of money and idols. In response to that I have repented and been redeemed so who ended up getting the victory & glory? MY ALMIGHTY LORD AND SAVIOR JESUS CHRIST!
It is not wrong to own things, it is wrong for things to own us!
